"He hath put a new song into my mouth; yea, even praise to our God."

Have you ever noticed how much some people babble? I had at least three or four people walk past my desk at work and do one of two things:

1) bla-bla-ba-dee-ba-bop-boo (or some other atonal syllabic nonsense)

OR

2) "There's got to be a better way than this" or "SIGH... Back to work..."

They are filling up the quiet moments with either nonsense or with foolish talk that does nothing but either depress or annoy them or their hearers. What a contrast to the Word of God, which says that God gives us "a new song" "a new heart" "wholesome words" "the words of eternal life" "everything pertaining to life and Godliness"! The Bible tells us that "we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit maketh intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered." We can fill up the empty space and quiet time around us with the praise of the great King Jesus, or with songs of deliverance which no one can learn because they must be imparted to us and experienced, not memorized by rote.
How sad it was for us when we had nothing to say that was different from the rest of the world! The talk of the unsaved is fruitless and idle and will all come to nothing. The Word of God, in contrast, "standeth forever" and will not return unto the Lord void (without accomplishing its intended goal).
Are we guarding our lips? Are we allowing the Spirit of God to not only influence our speech, but to CONTROL and even SUPPLY it? What are we turning to when we are ready to contribute to the conversations we have? Are we looking to sources other than our mighty God and all His ways and works? For what are we thankful? Let us enumerate all those things. In what ways has He strengthened us today? Let us tell of His excellent greatness. From what depths of sin has He brought us in His victory? Let us tell it to the nations. There is no quelling the tide of blathering and sheer noise coming from the TV and the radio and the Internet concerning all manner of sin and vice; neither should there be any abatement of the stream of praise and honor and glory and majesty ascribed to "Him Who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb", flowing from the lips of a redeemed and grateful people.
Father, today, in Thy mercy, give us by Thy Spirit the remembrance of all Thy marvelous works, that we might praise Thee with the fruit of our lips in a manner befitting Thy great grace towards us. Grant that our speech might flow with Thy pure Word as its content and Thy glory as its aim. Almighty God, as Thou hast declared, every tongue shall confess Jesus as Lord to Thy eternal glory; let our tongues confess the same now, as Thy grace permits. In the Name of Christ we humbly ask. Amen.
